24 Hours in Charleston, South Carolina

Encapsulating one of the more vibrant cultures in the south, Charleston is known for its art galleries, performing arts, and music venues, as well as its beachfront properties and historic sights. We spent 24 hours in Charleston with our Bric’s X Travel Backpack and Zero Halliburton ZAG Sling checking out everything the city has to offer.

Fresh off the plane, we stopped by the historic City Market, Charleston’s most-visited tourist spot, and the cultural heart of the city since 1804. Our ZAG Sling fit our camera perfectly, and here is where we took some of the best photos of the city. This massive open-air market is home to hundreds of vendors offering everything from incense to handmade rugs to the iconic hand-woven baskets and bowls the city is known for. It’s a friendly, joyful place, where visitors are exposed to cultures from around the world in one compact space.

With our Bric’s X Travel Backpack loaded up with handmade goods, we took a taxi over to the Mary Martin Gallery of Fine Art, which offers unique pieces by over 50 local, national, and international artists. Artist shows are held here every month, and August’s feature was Laura Palermo, whose vibrant paintings depict the sea turtles in the local animal rescue and recovery hospital including Eddie, Miss Royal, Ollie, and Tortuga.

After lunch we headed over to Patriot’s Point Links, Charleston’s most prestigious golf course. Situated on the edge of Charleston Harbor, this course offers spectacular views of the city, as well as Fort Sumter and the hundreds of international ships docking throughout the day. We snapped dozens of photos, played a round, and headed back into the city for dinner.

Taking a local recommendation, we stopped by The Fat Hen, opened in 2007 on Johns Island. Fred Neuville, owner and operator, has always been a fan of the farm-to-table concept since before it was a term, and The Fat Hen has staked its name on providing the freshest and most local food imaginable. If you like seafood, this is the place to be, with fish caught the same day it’s served.

Finally, we hit Prohibition, a trendy cocktail joint with an open-air patio, jazz music, and swing dancing nearly every night. Our Bric’s X Travel Backpack fit nicely under our table, even overloaded with our finds at Charleston’s City Market, so our day of shopping and exploring never felt like an encumbrance. We finished out the night with live music and a bit of dancing, and can’t wait for another opportunity to visit.
